I’ve Been There
Hi, I’m Jacqui! I’m a wife, and mom to the most amazing little boys I’ve ever seen! By day I’m a Registered Dietitian, fitness instructor and Weight Loss Coach supporting busy women like you and their health goals. Growing up in a European household, food was the answer to all of life’s ups and downs. I understood food as something that was meant to be enjoyed, shared and loved. My parents even owned a restaurant, so no doubt food was the center of my life for all of my upbringing.
At no point did I ever think that food could be a villain, something feared, something to stay away from until my adult life. Late in my twenties I was going through a very difficult season of my life and I began restricting food severely. I was hell bent on eating no more than 1,200 calories per day. At 5’5” and being super active this was going way under my personal calorie needs. My restriction came from a place of fear, I thought that the only way I could stay lean was to restrict and do hours of cardio. I was way off and way wrong.
I further complicated things with over-exercising, doing cardio 6 to 7 days a week. I had tried it all…when under-eating became too stressful I tried eliminating carbs and then skipping meals. At the time I didn’t even realize my own destructive behavior and certainly had no idea how I could reverse it. Eventually it led me to binging. I had stepped into the world of having a disordered relationship with food and had to make a tremendous effort to bring myself out of it.
There’s A Better Way
I came to realize that my undereating was affecting my energy levels, my ability to sleep and socialize, I would get anxious about going out with friends knowing I had to be around food. Finally, my ability to train and workout effectively was being compromised as well. There was simply no fuel on board to support my active lifestyle and I certainly wasn’t able to build muscle the way I had wanted to. I was in a downward spiral.
Once I refocused my efforts on appreciating myself, I changed my relationship with food back to what I remember growing up. I focused on the science of nutrition and food as fuel and a source of enjoyment, not punishment. Since then, I’ve never turned back.
What took me so long to realize is why I decided to help women reach their weight & fat loss goals without the torture of severe restriction and unnecessary over exercising.
These two negative habits are the opposite of what I teach my clients today. Now, I enjoy a fabulous relationship with food, one that I love sharing with my kids. We try new foods together, talk about it and love it. There is no guilt, shame or fear – just love.
